Katrina sucked. We got that New Orleans and I fully appreciate the disaster that it was. Gustav came in and threw some shingles around there. Gustav also wasn't as bad as expected (for some places, as you will soon see), causing crude oil prices to drop to a 5 month low. A good friend of mine (who is also a freelance artist for Stardock Games, so I know some things that no one else does MWAHAHAH) lives in Baton Rouge. They were hit far worse with Gustav than Katrina. Far worse.
I texted with my friend today. It was just texting because cell phone calls and land lines are still down for most of the city. Even Still President Bush came to visit and said everything was basically hunky dory. Other than the fact that the utility companies said that Baton Rouge will not get power restored for 4-6 weeks. Not days. WEEKS. My friend is very upset and depressed over all of this. He believes that the majority of federal and charitable aid is being funneled to New Orleans, the city that has been relatively spared but is much more predominate in our culture and attention from Katrina.
He can not leave as there is no gas to make it out of the state. He can not fly due to infrastructure damage and the high price of tickets. To those not from New Orleans it feels as if they do not exist to the rest of the nation. If media coverage is to be any metric of this then their emotional reactions are entirly justified.
UPDATE: They'll be without power for weeks, NewO should be back online by Monday

You forgot to mention the fact that in the entire city there is all of about one source of water.
